From the One California Day World Premiere

Back in July of 2007, Jason Baffa and Mark Jeremias debuted their film, One California Day, at El Segundo High School to a packed house of people hungry to see some great surf footage.  The movie delivered great surf footage in spades featuring surfers such as the Malloy brothers, Joel Tudor, Alex Knost, and Tyler Hatzikian.  But it also gave a glimpse into the lives of the surfers themselves.  We were able to see the surfers and their other creative outlets which gave the movie its intimate perspective.

Just prior to the start of the movie, I was able to shoot the following image of Jason Baffa and Mark Jeremias along with Tyler Hatzikian, Dan Malloy, Chris Malloy, and Keith Malloy.  I shot the image using a Sinar P 4×5 view camera on Polaroid Type 55 P/N film.

That was 3 years ago.  Check out what Chris Malloy, Jeff Johnson, and Keith Malloy have been up to lately.  The world premiere of 180° South: Conquerors of the Useless was February 10, at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.  See the trailer here.  It looks like an amazing film.

Luis Loyola

Today, I visited my friend, Luis Loyola.  He is the owner of Loyola Auto Interiors in El Segundo and a serious car guy.  I met him years ago while surfing El Porto where he is a regular.

For today’s 365, I stopped by his shop and took a photograph of him and his trusty sidekick, Charlie – a talking African Grey parrot.  He says all sorts of funny things.  When Luis is ready to head off to lunch, Charlie often says, “Taco Time”, which is the name of a nearby quick service Mexican restaurant.  When Luis grabs his keys to head home for the day, Charlie will say, “Bye.  Tomorrow.”

I’m sure that as the year progresses, you’ll be seeing more pictures of some of Luis’ classic cars, but these will have to do for now.  Bye.  Tomorrow!

Santa Monica After the Rain

I’m finding that in order to shoot and upload at least one image per day takes a lot more planning and preparation that I anticipated.  On my commutes to and from work, I’ve been taking notes of where I might need to be at a certain time to get a decent picture of this or that.  Ideally, I’d like to get the photos in the morning which relieves me of the pressure of having to shoot, edit, and upload an image at the end of the day.  For the days when I might have to get a shot on my way home from work, I’ve been taking notes of places along my commute and what time might be ideal for those spots.

Well, today my schedule didn’t permit an early morning shoot so I had to wait until after work to start scrambling for my 365 photos.  I had an idea of what I was going to shoot, but with the weather we had today, I wasn’t really sure what I was going to get in terms of light.  When I pulled out of the parking lot from work, I saw the light and scrapped my earlier plans and headed for the Santa Monica Pier.  It’s close to work and I thought I’d have a chance at a decent sunset.

Although the sun got blocked by some clouds on the horizon, I was able to grab a couple shots with some interesting lighting.  In the shot of the parking lot, the wet pavement served as a nice reflector for the orange sky.

Water Shots from D&W

It took a few days for the conditions to clean up to the point where I could try another outing with the water camera.  The waves were glassy and the wind was slightly offshore holding up the waves a bit so I was able to capture a couple of hollow ones.  I still have yet to catch one that I’m completely happy with, but it sure is fun trying.

Special thanks again to Rick G. for letting me use his camera.  Cheers!

This morning didn’t yield the photographs I was hoping to get for my 365.  I had a couple backup shots, but I wasn’t thrilled with them so after the big game, when I realized that I still hadn’t shot anything worth posting I got in my car and looked for something to shoot.  I did the long exposure traffic thing at the 405 freeway at La Tijera looking northbound.  Ideally, I would have taken this shot when there was still some light in the skies, but I had to finish watching the game before I took off.

Tyler Hatzikian in His Model A Roadster

A couple weeks ago, I was noodling around the parking lot after a surf.  Tyler was down in his Model A Roadster checking out the surf.  He decided it was worth a go-out so before he drove back to get his board, he did this and basically made everyone want to build their own AV8.
